William Conway, 1802-November 30, 1865 was a Navy Quartermaster and the 1st patriot of the Civil War. At the surrender of the Pensacola Navy Yard to the Rebels on 1/12/1861. Confederates ordered Conway to lower the American Flag. He replied: “I have served under that flag for forty years, and I won’t do it.” Conway was arrested and put in irons. A short time later he was sent north, to Brooklin, NY. where he remained till his death. In August of 1906 in Camden, Maine, the State and America’s Great White Fleet, honor him with a huge bolder and plaque in the town of his birth.
